Welcome to Porthpean Class (Year One)
2025-2026
We are looking forward to a great and productive year and hope you are too. It has been lovely to meet you all and all of the children too!
Miss Warn and Mrs Robins are the teachers. Miss Warn will be your teacher on a Monday and Tuesday and Mrs Robins will be your teacher on a Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Mrs O’ Dwyer and Miss Searle will also be supporting in class.
The children will start their day at 8:30am and doors remain open until 8:45am. There is lots of important learning which happens before 9am so please try to be on time! The end of the school day is 3:15-3:30pm. Please drop off and collect from the Year One classroom.
Learning
In Year 1 we have more structured whole class and group learning sessions than in Reception, although the children will also continue to learn through play. The playbased activities on offer are carefully thought out to support their development and
learning, promoting independence, curiosity and co-operation.
Tapestry
We will continue to use Tapestry in Year 1. There will not be as many observations recorded as last year, as the majority of the children’s learning will now be recorded in books. However, Tapestry will still be used as an important communication tool
and will be one of the main ways we get information out to you and weekly phonics videos will be uploaded on a Friday.
Reading
Once we have assessed them, your child will be given a set of reading books to share with you at home. It is important that you try to listen to your child read at least 4 times a week. Please write in their reading diaries when they have read at home
and make sure they bring their reading books and reading records into school each day for further reading and monitoring. Regular reading practise at home is a key way that children make the expected amount of progress in reading so please give
them all the support they need. Do let us know if you need any help with this. We encourage children to read the same book numerous times until they are fluent and show a good understanding of the text. Children who have completed their 4 reads weekly will be in with the chance of taking Rory Bear home (the reading bear) to keep for the week and return back to
school the following Friday.
Snack Time
Free fruit will be given daily as the children’s snack but they will no longer receive free milk as they did in Reception. You are also welcome to send your child in with their own healthy snack if you prefer.
P.E
This half term, children can come to school in their PE kit on their PE days on Tuesday and Wednesday. Please ensure that this, along with their water bottle, packed lunch box, coat and school uniform are clearly labelled with their name.
Please keep an eye on Tapestry, the school website and the school Facebook page for regular updates and news. If you have any quick questions, don't hesitate to ask us at the door. However, if you would like a longer conversation, please arrange a meeting by phoning the school office on 850503.
