Welcome to Porthpean Class. We are looking forward to a (hopefully!) settled and productive year and hope you are too.

Mrs. Cameron will be teaching on a Monday and Tuesday and Mrs. Robins will be teaching on a Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Mrs. Bredin, Miss McToldridge and Miss Stapleton will be our full-time teaching assistants. We are also fortunate to have Miss Collop, who is a trainee teacher and will be us for the Autumn term.
The children will start their day at 8:40am and end their day at 3pm so please ensure they are dropped off and collected at these times following the one-way system around school and maintaining social distancing whilst on the school premises. If you have older children in school with an earlier start time, please drop your Year 1 child to us at that earlier time so that you don’t need to wait around.

Learning

In Year 1 we have more structured whole class and group learning sessions than in Reception, although the children will also continue to learn through play. The play-based activities on offer are carefully thought out to support their development and learning, promoting independence, curiosity and co-operation.

Tapestry
We will continue to use Tapestry in Year 1. There will not be as many observations recorded as last year, as the majority of the children’s learning will now be recorded in books. However, Tapestry will still be used as an important communication tool and will be one of the main ways we get information out to you. We would love it if you could continue to log on regularly and let us know about your child’s development at home.

Reading
Once we have assessed them, your child will be given a set of reading books to share with you at home. It is important that you try to listen to your child read at least 4 times a week for approximately 5-10 minutes. Please write in their reading diaries when they have read at home and make sure they bring their reading books and diaries into school each day for further reading and monitoring. Regular reading practise at home is the only way that children make the expected amount of progress in reading so please give them all the support they need. Do let us know if you need any help with this.

Snack Time
Free fruit will be given daily as the children’s snack but they will no longer receive free milk as they did in Reception. You are also welcome to send your child in with their own healthy snack if you prefer.

P.E.
P.E will be on a Friday although children usually keep their P.E kit in school so that they have access to it every day if needed. Please ensure that this, along with their water bottle, packed lunch box, coat and school uniform are clearly labelled with their name.

Hygiene
Maintaining good hygiene will play a big part in your child’s day at school, in particular regular hand washing.

Please keep an eye on Tapestry, the school website and the school Facebook and Twitter pages for regular updates and news.

If you have any quick questions, don't hesitate to ask us at the door. However, if you would like a longer conversation, please arrange a meeting by phoning the school office on 850503.

Many thanks,

Mrs. Cameron & Mrs. Robins
