Welcome to Porthpean Class. We are looking forward to a (hopefully!) settled and productive year and hope you are too.
Mrs. Cameron will be teaching on a Monday and Tuesday and Mrs. Robins will be teaching on a Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Ms. Bredin, Miss McToldridge and Miss Stapleton will be our full-time teaching assistants.
The children will start their day at 8:40am and end their day at 3pm so please ensure they are dropped off and collected at these times following the one-way system around school and maintaining social distancing whilst on the school premises. If you have older children in school with an earlier start time, please drop your Year 1 child to us at that earlier time so that you don’t need to wait around.
Year 1 involves more structured whole class and group learning sessions throughout the day although the children will also continue to learn through play. The play-based activities are carefully thought out to support their development and learning, promoting independence, curiosity and co-operation.
We will continue to use Tapestry as a form of communication, where we share observations of your child’s learning and keep you informed of important information. There will not be as many observations recorded as last year, as part of their learning will be recorded in books. We would love it if you could continue to log on regularly and let us know about your child’s development at home.
Once we have assessed them, your child will be given a set of reading books to bring home to read. It is important that you try to read at least 4 times a week. Please write in their reading diaries when they have read at home. The children will need to bring their reading books and diaries into school each day for further reading and monitoring. This is vital to children’s progress in reading so please support us and your child with this area.
Free fruit will be given daily as the children’s snack but they will no longer receive milk as they did in Reception. You are also welcome to send your child in with their own healthy snack if you prefer.
P.E will be on a Friday although your child will need their P.E kit in school every day. Please ensure that this, along with their water bottle, packed lunch box, coat and school uniform are clearly labelled with their name.
Good hygiene will play a big role in your child’s day at school. Regular hand washing, rotation of resources and sanitising of resources will be part of our daily routine in Porthpean Class to ensure children continue to be safe at school. Please could you help us with this by making sure that the children do not bring in anything from home apart from their book bag, coat, sun hat and cream if sunny and lunch box (no toys).
Please keep an eye on Tapestry, the school website and the school Twitter page for regular updates and news.
If you have any quick questions, don't hesitate to ask us at the door. However, if you would like a longer conversation, please arrange a meeting by phoning the school office on 850503.
