Welcome to Year 3
Hello and welcome to Year 3!
Children, we are all really looking forward to a great year with you. We hope that you are ready for lots of hard work and lots of fun!
Mrs Carter will be teaching you Mondays to Friday. Your teaching assistants will be Mrs Barnes, Mrs Hodkin, Mrs Goostry and Miss Lofthouse.
We will open the classroom door at 8:40 every morning and close it at 8:50, when we will do the register. When, you arrive, please organise your belongings sensibly and start your morning maths. At the end of the day, we will dismiss you between 3:10 and 3:20.
P.E. will be on a Monday all term, although this occasionally changes, so please could you make sure that you have a full P.E. kit (white t-shirt, black shorts, trainers and a change of socks for girls wearing tights) in school every day. Please could you ask your adults at home to check that all items of P.E. kit, including your P.E. bag, are clearly labelled with your name.
We will set a homework task linked to our topic every term. Please could you bring your homework to school as soon as you finish it (any time during the term) so that you have time to share your hard work with your classmates. We will be sharing finished homeworks in a celebration assembly at the end of each full term.
You will be expected to bring your reading book, reading record and spelling book into school everyday and take them home every evening. You will be asked to reading to an adult at least four times a week, as well as reading independently everyday in class. You are expected to practice your spellings at least four times a week too. Do these homeworks and you will make amazing progress this year!
Year 3 Class Teacher
Parents and carers, we appreciate how much time and effort you have already put in to supporting your child with their learning and hope that this continues into Key Stage 2. Here is some information which we will obviously also share with the children:
- Spellings lists are given at the beginning of each half term and children are expected to use their Home Spelling Book to neatly practice their spellings in at least four times a week.
- We can see that there are some really keen and able readers in the class and we hope to continue to encourage this love of reading. In Year 3, the children will continue to choose books from the correct Accelerated Reader level and they will do an online quiz to demonstrate their understanding of the book in school before they move on to the next book. As in Year 2, children are expected to read a minimum of 4 times a week at home with an adult. At this age, even for more able readers, it is very important that children still practice reading aloud; fluency and keeping the reader engaged with expression and intonation are key skills. More able readers may sometimes choose to read to themselves, then explain what has happened to an adult and discuss any words or concepts they were unsure of. Please could you record the reading you do together in your child’s school reading record and sign it.
- Times tables are tested every week. By the end of Year 3 the children will be expected to know all multiplication and division facts for the 2, 5, 10, 3 and 4 times tables. Please encourage your child to practice on the times tables sheets that come home each week.
Thank you for your lovely letters introducing your child/children. Miss Blake has passed on a lot of information. If anything changes at home or with your child please don't hesitate to speak to Mrs Carter or Mrs Hodkin at the door. If you require a longer chat please make an appointment at the office or ask for a telephone call.
