Year 1 Phonics Screening Check

Year 1 Phonics Screening Check

Children in Year 1 throughout the country will be taking part in a phonics screening check during June 2020. Children in Year 2 will also take the test if they did not achieve the required result in Year 1.

The screening check is designed to confirm whether individual children have learnt phonic decoding and blending skills to the expected standard. The check contains 40 words including both real and nonsense words. The children will sit one-to-one with myself and will read each word aloud. They can read these words at their own pace.

How can I help at home?

  • Read as much as possible with your child.

  • If your child is finding a word difficult, help them by encouraging them to say each sound from left to right.

  • Blend the sounds by pointing to each one. E.g. ‘c’ in cat, ‘ee’ in been.

  • Discuss the meaning of the words if your child does not know what they have read.

Further information will be sent home nearer the time. Please do not hesitate to ask any questions about this check.

Many thanks,
