Curriculum Statement

As a school we follow the National Curriculum, which sets out the key requirements to be taught to children at certain times.

From these core requirements we have developed topics of interest through which we can ensure these key requirements are taught.

Through our curriculum, we aim to provide for the full academic, personal and social development of each pupil, and to encourage children to work and think independently and to make decisions within a moral code. We aim to foster a love of learning and develop the key skills that will enable children to be independent thinkers and effective citizens of the future. To this end we make sure our curriculum is lively and stimulating, covering a broad range of topics to capture children’s interests. We enrich the curriculum where we can through visits, visitors and opportunities for outdoor learning. Our children learn in a variety of ways but we work hard to ensure that it is fun.

Each year group works on a new topic each term. Through these topics we cover all aspects of the curriculum as well as teaching basic skills of reading, writing and mathematics. The topics we teach are reviewed from time to time and our current Curriculum Map is available for viewing on the school website.

Efficient communication of ideas and emotions in oral and written form is vital to all aspects of a child's learning and meaningful participation in wider society. Therefore, English is held at the core of our curriculum.

Our aim is for all Treverbyn children to not only be confident and enthusiastic speakers, readers and writers, but for them to develop a true love of literature. We embed opportunities and activities for the development and consolidation of these skills throughout all aspects of each day. Included in this provision are opportunities for speaking and drama activities as well as reading and writing in different styles and for different purposes and across cultures.

We place a high priority on speaking and listening because children need a fluent command of language in order to understand the cultural, intellectual and spiritual aspects of the world. To develop this, they need exposure to language through first-hand experiences, quality conversations and access to quality literature.

We use the highly successful Read Write Inc. Phonics programme to teach our children to read, write and spell. Our children do very well in the phonics screening check and by Year 2, the majority are fluent readers with the best chance of success in the KS1 tests.  In Key Stage 2, children continue to develop and apply their phonic knowledge through a carefully structured and progressive programme of spellings. Key texts are identified to support each topic and provide high-quality examples to inspire children’s learning. Intervention and differentiation are targeted for those children who require additional support. We use Accelerated Reader, Better Reading Partners and Reading Recovery to support children’s engagement and development in reading.

Our library, reading areas and cross-curricular approach to teaching and learning all serve to build a community of life-long, passionate readers.


Everything begins with concrete exploration, based on real life situations and experiences, helping to create a context of learning children can understand. Every lesson is planned with small, clear careful steps to develop children's mathematical understanding and in turn develop their mental calculation skills. Children are taught how they can represent their learning pictorially and this supports their development of formal written methods.

This process of concrete, pictorial and abstract learning is reflected in our Calculations policy which has been developed to reflect the 2014 Maths curriculum and explains, with examples, the calculation methods taught in each year group for all four operations (+-÷x). 

The National Curriculum focuses on 3 key areas; Fluency, Reasoning and Problem Solving.

Fluency – becoming fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, through frequent practice to aid children's development of their conceptual understanding, recall and be able to apply their knowledge.

Reasoning- making conjectures, investigating and representing findings and being able to explain and justify their ideas.

Problem solving – applying their mathematical understanding to a variety of problems.

Cross curricular links are developed whenever possible, especially in science and ICT and problem solving sessions are woven throughout each term’s lessons.

Mastery in Mathematics:

Since mastery is what we want pupils to acquire (or go on acquiring), rather than teachers to demonstrate, we use the phrase ‘teaching for mastery’ to describe the range of elements of classroom practice and school organisation that combine to give pupils the best chances of mastering mathematics.

And mastering maths means acquiring a deep, long-term, secure and adaptable understanding of the subject. At any one point in a pupil’s journey through school, achieving mastery is taken to mean acquiring a solid enough understanding of the maths that’s been taught to enable him/her move on to more advanced material.

In the teaching and learning of science we aim for all children to build up a body of scientific knowledge and understanding as a foundation for future enquiry and develop a greater understanding of themselves and their environment, in addition to all the learning skills.

Children are encouraged to observe, ask questions, test ideas, make deductions and predictions. As well as learning different scientific knowledge a large, amount of time is spent on investigative and experimental work.

In Early Years Foundation Stage, Science is taught across the curriculum; children are encouraged to explore the world around them and talk about what they notice.

Creative Curriculum

Our new curriculum is action packed and full of interactive and exciting learning opportunities throughout the key stages.  It is stimulating, engaging and promotes independence.  Children will be taught the foundation subjects (History, Geography, Music, Art, DT, PSHE, and PE) through motivating topics such as Superheroes,

A Victorian Cornish Childhood: Fantastic or Fatal?  What’s behind the magic door.  Children will become explorers and detectives to find out more about the world around them and significant historical periods.  Trips and visits linked to the topic will bring their learning to life.

For every topic we have a WOW day where children (and staff!) either dress up or do something exciting to launch the new topic.  Some topics start with a trip.  The aim is to make children’s learning as memorable as possible so that they talk about it. This is because we know that the more children talk about their learning, the deeper their learning goes.
